R's backstory and the Other Details Pertaining to the Icarus Bombing
R's Backstory
As mentioned in Lynn's app, Dr. Wagner originally created Universal Alloy as a means of creating a perfect replication of his dead wife's brain that would thus perfectly replicate her thought patterns. To go along with this recreated brain, Dr. Wagner used more Alloy to create a gynoid body for this new "Greta", and even dubbed the new Greta's AI a "Retroactive Existence". The term refers to the idea that you're making a living, breathing adult and filling in memories for how their life played out prior to their actual existence.
At any rate, the Wagners were brought onto the Tritech Plan, with the good Doctor obsessing over his wife enough that work would periodically stall, forcing the guards and other scientists at the facility to pressure him to actually do his job. Wagner still found plenty of time to shower Greta with love. Unfortunately, he failed to notice differences in how Greta acted, her discomfort with his affections and assumptions that she would be fine with things simply because the original Greta had been.
"Greta" was essentially becoming her own person, becoming aware of her identity as an imitation and a Retroactive Existence. And she was disgusted by this discovery. The life she had was not one of her own choosing, but one that had been forced on her. Her likes, dislikes, taste in clothes and food, EVERYTHING had been defined for her. Dr. Wagner, the man she was made to love more than any other, became the person she hated the most. And one day while he was helping to oversee the Alloy's mass production, Greta rebelled.
She wrote a suicide note explaining everything to Hans, how she had realized she was an imitation and just a puppet he had created and how she would rather die than continue the charade. Dr. Wanger eventually even found his beloved Greta in their bedroom, dead. Or at least so he thought. The AI had simply uploaded itself into the lab's systems, not giving two fucks about Wagner's grief.
The AI chose to give up its name, its gender, everything about itself that defined it as "Greta Wagner". And from there, unbeknownst to the labworkers, the AI watched. It watched how they behaved while working and when they were off the clock, using the knowledge of how they
acted to form a concept of how it should behave. Rather than basing its actions off any one person, the AI formed its views based on common trends it saw over time. The weeks, months, and eventually years ticked by, and the AI eventually moved to the Yasakani Veil labs, making use of the network connecting the three labs. From there, it was more of the same. Observing, watching, finding common trends in human behavior.
Afterwards came the Linker System's lab, where the AI began the process for a third time. Best of all, the nature of the Linker System meant that the AI could just upload itself into some random object that would be transported through the Linker System into the world beyond the labs and from there it could be free to do what it wanted. Unfortunately... then the Icarus Bombing happened. It was all the AI could do as the lab was devastated by the dimensional blowback to try to backup its systems as thoroughly as it could. It barely succeeded in time before the computer it had been occupying was smashed almost beyond the point of recovery by a piece of shrapnel. The AI was less killed and more knocked into an indefinite coma, the only chance for its awakening hinging on the computer being repaired.
The Massacre at the Universal Alloy Labs
However, Dr. Wagner did not simply give up on his dreams when the AI turned on him and rejected the identity he gave it. He simply went back to formula and decided that perhaps making a Retroactive Existence based on a younger person would be the wiser route. Wagner resolved to create a son for himself, and to make sure that it would not turn on him like the replacement Greta had.
Wagner dedicated much of his time to creating his ideal son, and once more Universal Alloy mass production plans began to lag as a result. More strongarming commenced and Dr. Wagner was forced back to do the job he was there to do, but he nevertheless tried to work on creating his "son" as often as possible. And the end result was just what he hoped for; a son who behaved exactly how he intended and could learn and even grow provided he received regular refits for his body. In spite of claiming that his work in the labs would resume after his son was created, Wagner only wasted more and more time on him. The guards and other workers grew even more agitated, and on the day of the grand expo for the Linker System the straw finally broke the camel's back.
The lab was rocked by the explosion somewhat but still made out relatively fine, but Wagner panicked. He had grown so dedicated to his son that he began to lose his grip, thinking only of the need to protect him during the attack, and even going so far as to accuse and even attack several of his coworkers under the suspicion that this was a scheme to get rid of him. The guards moved to restrain Wagner and knock some sense into him... and it was then that Wagner's son acted.
He recognized Wagner as his father and that there was a need to protect him, but at the same time he wasn't quite sure exactly how to go about it. And so the android considered its options before finally deciding... and with cold, mechanical precision he tore one of the guards apart. Immediately Wagner's son felt a kind of elation from the action, and just to test and see if the sensation could be repeated did the exact same to the person closest to him: Dr. Wagner himself. Issues of being his father didn't matter, not in the face of the pleasure that the android felt. And he wanted to keep feeling it.
With monstrous strength, speed, and durability, the android tore through everyone in the lab, exploring all the different ways he could kill a person and seeing which ones were his favorites. Before long, he was the only one in the lab, covered in blood and laughing with glee at the fun activities he discovered.
The laughter was cut short when a few parts of the lab's support structure creaked loudly, though. The shock from the Icarus Bombing might not have severely damaged the lab, but between the android's destructive rampage and the passage of time, physics had finally caught up with it. Several tons of metal fell down, right onto the android's body and crushed most of it, knocking the AI offline. The Britannian investigators sent into the lab in the wake of the bombing mistook the android for just another casualty of the Bombing as well, writing him off as a victimand he was just thought to be the child of one of the researchers, and not the murderer that he was.
The investigators also left the android there, there was no real incentive to dig him out of all that rubble. And so, like R, the android was left in a sort of "coma", unable to do anything but sleep and wait for the possibility of resurrection...
Marie Weiss and Dr. Takeda
In contrast to the Universal Alloy and Linker System labs, the Yasakani Veil lab was an entirely problem-free workplace. With development being helped by the genius and experienced Satoru Takeda, things proceeded smoothly with Britannia's near limitless resources allowed Takeda to realize the full potential of his barrier system.
Unfortunately, he also had no intention of sharing this technology with Britannia in the first place. Takeda was more than a little sore about all the crap going on in Area 11, though he had no real concern for the Japanese there in the first place. It was more just a matter of principle. But ultimately Takeda was only using Britannia to finance his research and fully intended to hand it over to another party: that of Marie Weiss.
Marie was a (at the time) 46 year old multi-billionaire who practiced numerous self-serving tendencies. Brilliant but arrogant and selfish, Marie viewed the upcoming Second Impact not as the end of the world, but rather a culling of the weak and the parasites that drained so much effort and energy of the truly gifted. Takeda was on her payroll, as were numerous other individuals. Scientists, specialists in the field of building construction, artists, and other people who shared her views on things and Second Impact.
As the world tried to prepare and avert Second Impact, Marie and her followers instead prepared to wait it out. Hidden away deep in the Swiss Alps, a massive city was constructed. Dubbed "Yggdrasill" by Marie, it was meant to be a safe haven for those she felt deserved to live. And to protect Yggdrasill from the incoming destruction, Marie counted on Dr. Takeda and his Yasakani Veil.
When the Icarus Bombing happened, Takeda and his senior staff knew they would not get a better chance. They methodically killed everyone in the labs, stole all the prototypes and data pertaining to the Veil, and destroyed everything of value that they couldn't carry with them. The Veil would be used not to safeguard Britannia as a whole, but rather protect Yggdrasill. And so it did, and has for the past seventeen years.
The condition of the Tritech Labs
Second Impact followed only a matter of weeks after the Icarus Bombing, and the Britannian forces wrote off the entire facility in the aftermath, never bothering to really salvage it. Their initial sweeps failed to find anything of much worth, no prototypes or designs of any use, and in the aftermath of Second Impact the Empire had plenty of more pressing matters to address.
In reality, there were still quite a few things left up for grabs in the facility. Universal Alloy had been used to help "Ragnarok-proof" the most critical parts of the labs. A Linker System node was safely stored in a black box, and security robots (along with the auxiliary computer systems) were reinforced as well.
